Gorilla Tracking in Uganda: A Detailed Guide by Calsaar Safaris.

Gorilla tracking is one of Uganda's most thrilling and unforgettable wildlife experiences.

Gorilla tracking is one of Uganda's most thrilling and unforgettable wildlife experiences. Uganda is home to over half of the world’s mountain gorillas, found in the lush and misty forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. At Calsaar Safaris, we offer tailored gorilla tracking tours that ensure you immerse yourself in the beauty and wonder of these majestic creatures.

Uganda is a country bursting with variety, and a multi-week journey here will leave you with endless stories and experiences. We love to combine cultural, wildlife, and off-the-beaten-path adventures for those who want to truly immerse themselves in all Uganda has to offer. Here are some of our most exciting itineraries:

Mountain gorillas are critically endangered primates known for their gentle demeanor and family-oriented social structure. They live in groups of 5-30 individuals, led by a dominant silverback. These intelligent primates share 98% of their DNA with humans, making encounters profoundly moving.

  1. Permit Purchase.
To track gorillas in Uganda, you need a permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) through a registered and licensed tour operator.

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Divided into four sectors – Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga – each hosting multiple gorilla families.
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Known for the Nyakagezi family.
  1. At Calsaar Safaris, we assist in securing your permit well in advance to ensure availability.

  2. Pre-Trek Briefing.

Before starting the trek, UWA guides provide an orientation at the park headquarters. You will learn about gorilla behavior, tracking rules, and safety protocols.

  1. The Trek.
Gorilla tracking can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. The trek is challenging but rewarding, as you traverse dense forests, steep hills, and streams.

  2. The Encounter.
Once you locate a gorilla family, you’ll spend an awe-inspiring hour observing and photographing them. Witnessing their interactions, feeding, grooming, and playful behavior is an experience like no other.

To protect gorillas and enhance your experience, follow these guidelines;

  • Maintain a 7-meter distance from gorillas.
  • Avoid direct eye contact; gorillas may interpret this as a challenge.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke near the gorillas.
  • If you are ill, reschedule your tracking experience to protect gorillas from human diseases.
  • Follow instructions from your guides at all times.

  • Sturdy hiking boots.
  • Lightweight, waterproof jacket.
  • Long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against insects.
  • Gloves for gripping vegetation.
  • Reusable water bottles and snacks.
  • A camera (no flash photography).

Gorilla tracking is available year-round, but the best time is during Uganda’s dry seasons:

  • June to September
  • December to February

During these months, trails are less slippery, making trekking easier.
